2024/2025 Workshops

Wednesday December 4, 2024 – Small Flash Workshop

Maximum number of attendees – 8 with 2 instructors (Ross and Manfred)

Attendees must own a small external flash (speedlight) that is compatible with their camera make and model and must know how to use it in TTL and manual mode.  Flash must have a head that rotates at least 180 degrees.

This workshop is primarily aimed at intermediate photographers would want to improve their flash photography.  We will cover issues with direct flash (camera mounted flash aimed at the subject), bounce lighting and basic off camera flash.

We will be working in groups of two, with one person being the subject and the other the shooter.  Everyone will get a chance to shoot and be the model.

Wednesday January 29, 2025 – 10 Basic Editing Tools in Post-processing

Maximum number of attendees – 30 with one instructor (Ross)

Ross will demonstrate 10 basic editing techniques that can be used by any photographer to enhance the images that come out of your camera.  While Ross will be using Adobe software to demonstrate these techniques, the functions are available in virtually all other photo editing software.

Thursday, March 27, 2025 – Uncovering and Refining your “Diamonds in the Rough” Images

Maximum number of attendees – 30 with one instructor (Manfred)

Demonstrate how to identify a strong image that just needs to be refined in post-processing.   Attendees will be asked to submit one of their images (ideally in RAW format) to Manfred.

Some of these images will be analyzed and edited during the session to show the attendees their work can be enhanced in post.

24/25 Annual Photography Challenge: Triptych

Definition:
A triptych is an artwork made up of a series of three images. The three individual triptych images must be interrelated and can explore a particular subject, a specific style, a theme, or even one image that is “split” to create three separate images. In addition, a triptych can show a sequential progression, often suggesting a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end.

Purpose:
Ultimately, an effective triptych emphasizes the Gestalt concept of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

Background:
Triptychs were very popular artworks in the 15th century and usually depicted religious themes. They often had a larger central image with two smaller hinged images on each side of the large image. The two smaller images could be folded over the larger image and therefore protected all three images. More recently, triptychs are created photographic images.

The KSCCC Annual Challenge 2024-2025:

Shoot a photographic series that works as a triptych, whether 3 separate images or one image “split” into three individual images.
The triptych can be submitted as three separate images or as one image showing an amalgamation of the three images (i.e. a type of collage).
During the 2024-2025 season, there will be several short tutorials during Friday meetings on various ways to collate the three images to present them as one unified triptych image.

Submission Deadline: May 30, 2025
Presentation: June 6, 2025

Do you have some photography gear that you haven’t used in a long time? Do you have an old camera that’s shutter hasn’t been open for years and is just taking up space in a closet somewhere? Or do you have some old gear that will never again see the light of day stashed away in a cardboard box?  Bring any photo gear you don’t use or want anymore to the KSCCC Photo Gear Giveaway on Friday, October 4th.

 Please note that, if any photo equipment you bring is still on the giveaway table at the end of the meeting, you need to take it back home. 

New Pictures in the Seniors Centre

In August, we completed changing the six KSCCC pictures in the Seniors Centre. The new pictures will remain up until January, 2025. Please take a minute to check them out when you are next there. Thanks to the following photographers for some great pictures: Rex Benning, Michele Doran-Sugar, Michelle Faber, Marlene van Hasselt-Gorski, and Jay-Dee Purdy.

As a reminder, the KSCCC is looking for additional pictures to hang in the Seniors Centre, and we encourage all club members to contribute.  We are now open for business for the January change. If you have a picture you really like, then chances are people at the centre would enjoy seeing it too.     Northern Adventure Voyages September 6th

    Dave Haggarty (Hon F CAPA) is no stranger to Canada’s camera clubs. He was a member of Ottawa’s RA Photo Club for 25 years (twice as chairman) and a member of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) since 1998, serving on their Board for 7 years, two as chairman. Dave has attended some 15 CAPA national conferences and organized three here in Ottawa. He volunteered as a photographer for the Ottawa Folk and Jazz Festivals for 15 years.

    Since moving to Kanata in 2015, Dave’s camera club focus has been on the KSCCC, and most of his photos have been captured during international and domestic travels, often on smaller cruise ships. In 2009 he and his wife Lynn took their second journey in the Canadian Eastern Arctic, aboard a 100-passenger ice-strengthened vessel. Dave will present three AV shows of their back-to-back adventure voyages in the Northwest Passage and High Arctic on September 6.

    Submitting Photos to KSCCC from Apple Email

    When submitting photos to the club for the monthly challenge, it is important to use the correct resolution. The optimum resolution given the club’s current projection facilities and most of our monitors is 1920×1080.

    If you are submitting one or more photos using a MacBook or Apple desktop using the Mac operating system and the Apple email app, it is important to make sure that you are mailing the image(s) at their actual size.

    This is a sample email of a photo being submitted. Note that the “Image Size” is set to “Actual Size”.

    Other size options are:

    • Small (320×240)
    • Medium (640×480)
    • Large (1280×960)

    but these are not needed to submit an image to KSCCC.

    Another important thing to note is that the Apple Email app will remember the Image Size that was used for a previous email. So, try and remember to always check this email option when sending photos.

    2024 RA Photo Club open house

    The RA Photo Club (RAPC) is holding its yearly Open House on September 17, 2024 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the RA Centre for its upcoming 2024-25 season.

    Every year, the RAPC welcomes photography aficionados and visitors to learn about the RAPC’s yearly program, its learning activities, and group outings.

    As a plus, the RAPC will have set-ups and experienced photographers to provide assistance with shooting live models in a real photo studio. Get your camera ready!

    Also, while you visit, the RAPC will offer headshots to everyone attending. Tip: Bring a USB drive so you’ll be able to take your photo home and share with family and friends or on social media.

    The RA Centre is located at 2451 Riverside Drive in Ottawa, next to the Billings Bridge shopping mall.

    Teach Basic Photography

    The Kanata Seniors’ Centre will hold a basic photography course this fall and is looking for an instructor:

    The Kanata Seniors’ Center is looking to hire a photography instructor for Monday Nights from 6:30-7:30pm Sept 30- November 18th.

    This is an adult course.

    As a prerequisite to being hired, you must have current standard first aid and CPR C. As well as a police records cheque completed in the last 6 months from the date of hire.

    Pay is $20.22 per hour as an introductory arts instructor.

    Free Portrait Session

    Two local photographers who are members of The Professional Photographers of Canada – Ontario Region (Eastern Branch) have invited members of the KSCCC to participate in a free portrait session on Sunday, July 28th at 10 a.m. Interested KSCCC members should meet in the lobby of the National Arts Centre (NAC) at 10 a.m. and the portrait shoot will take place nearby under the bridge adjacent to the Rideau Canal, rain or shine. Bring along camera equipment suitable for portraiture and members of the PPOC will be present to assist you. Please see the attached screenshot with more details as well as contact
