The list of our Monthly Challenge topics follows:
June /July/August – Abstracts in Nature
For the meeting on September 11th – Submit by September 4
- Interesting shapes, tones and colours abound in nature. Photograph items to emphasise the abstract without revealing the actual subject (e.g. colours of a bird’s wing, abstract shapes in rocks, designs in wood, flower petals).
September – Structure
For the meeting on October 2nd – Submit by September 25
- Structure is everywhere – skeletal structure, organization structure – manmade or natural. It supports us and sometimes frustrates us. It provides a framework we can operate under. If your image contains “structure” – natural or manmade, it can be included.
October – Hats – with or without hair
For the meeting on November 7th – Submit by October 30th
- Old hats, new hats, large hats, small hats, baseball caps and all of it. If it covers your head (but is not a scarf nor a wig), it is a hat. Focus on manufactured objects that cover our heads, either partially or completely, with an emphasis on shape and texture.
November – Water – Water, water everywhere and all
For the meeting on December 4th – Submit by November 27
- Water makes up most of our bodies and is present in some amount in just about everything. We need it to live – but not too much. All states of water can be included in your image – ice, steam, vapour, snow, etc..
December – What’s Old is New Again (Repurposed Things)
For the meeting on January 8th – Submit by January 1
- Photograph items that have been repurposed and given a new life (e.g. flowerpots made from old tires, furniture made from used metal or wood, old windows that are now new art pieces).
January –White – or white-ish
For the meeting on February 5th – Submit by January 29
- Show images emphasizing white or nearly white detail. Examples: fog in the early morning, a blaze of sunlight, objects that are pure white, or of mixed colours with white overtones. White subject with white background.
February – Creative Processing
For the meeting on March 5th – Submit by February 26
- Try some rarely used editing technique. Experiment, explore, go for it. Includes in-camera techniques, special filters or open up the Photoshop book and experiment to your heart’s content.
March –Favorite Things/Guilty Pleasures
For the meeting on April 2nd – Submit by March 26
- Those things in life that appeal to us – stuff you love and can’t get enough of. Showcase those things in your life that most appeal to you, like rich cheese, gooey chocolate, creamy ice cream, naughty books, fine wine, etc.
April – Street/Alley
For the meeting on May 7th – Submit by April 30
- Those interesting streets and back alleys that have their own special appeal (or not). Consider a “time lapse” composite – before and after collection, changes over time. Snow melt, wet to dry, etc.
May – Complementary Colours
For the meeting on June 4th – Submit by May 28
- Colour combinations that occur in nature and by design that work together. Do a Google search for “complementary colours” to get some ideas. Show harmonious colour combinations from opposite sides of the colour wheel, e.g., blue with yellow, red with cyan, green with magenta.
