Manfred Mueller will give a presentation on Just Add Light – Small Flash Photography on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Manfred is an award-winning, Kanata-based photographer who uses flash in much of his work. His Speedlight always sits in his camera bag ready to be pulled out when he needs additional light.
The talk will deal with the practical aspects of speedlight / small flash photography. It will cover approaches that can be used to get strong and effective images. Common mistakes made with flash photography are also demonstrated and discussed. These techniques will be demonstrated during the presentation.
For anyone interested in acquiring small flash for their own work, various options for the small flash and accessories will be discussed.
As mentioned at the November club meeting, the KSCCC will be promoting the club with a display of our work in the display case at the entrance to the Beaverbrook Library (next door), in January. We are looking for a few (5 or 6) 8” x 10” framed pictures for the display. This article explains what kind of pictures are needed, and how members can participate. We don’t have a lot of time to get the display ready, so please have a read below and, if you can help, let us know as soon as possible.
The theme for the January display is: “Winter: A Great Time to Create Pictures”. The display will promote getting outside to take winter pictures, as well as being creative in taking pictures and post-processing of pictures, inside. We are looking for a couple of good outdoor winter pictures, a couple of good indoor compositions, as well as a couple of artistic post-processing examples. The pictures need to be 8” x 10” inches in size in landscape format, and framed without matting in a fairly plain black or silver frame.
We are looking for very good pictures, which KSCCC members are proud to display and which showcase the great work produced by the club. We encourage all KSCCC members to participate. Pictures will be considered in the order submitted. We will be choosing a combination of pictures that complement each other, and best promotes the theme. To submit your picture for consideration please send an electronic copy of it in an email to contact@ksccc.ca, with the Subject line “Library display in January“ and put Attention: Jan & Bruce Turner in the text.
To meet the January date, we need to receive your submissions as soon as possible and certainly by the end of November. This will allow us time to select pictures and notify participants so that they can print and frame their pictures by mid-December.
We know there are lots of great pictures out there, so please take a few minutes to consider helping the KSCCC promote the club.
The KSCCC has six pictures hanging in the Seniors’ Centre. Because of the Covid shut down the current pictures have been hanging since January 2020. Historically, the KSCCC has swapped pictures out every four or so months to allow more of our great work to be displayed. We would like to get that process started again beginning in January 2023. This blog post explains how members can submit their pictures for display at the Seniors’ Centre.
Our current plan is to change the pictures three times a year: at the end of January; the end of May; and, the end of September. This will keep things fresh for Seniors’ Centre visitors and give all KSCCC members more opportunities to show off their work. Currently, we are not planning to curate the pictures or propose themes. We’re looking for pictures of broad interest (P.G. of course!) Travel, nature, wildlife, landscapes, architecture, people, creative, macro, all would be good ideas for pictures.
We encourage all KSCCC members to participate. This is not a competition and we are not looking for the “best” pictures. We are looking for good pictures, which KSCCC members are proud to display and that Seniors’ Centre members would enjoy seeing. To support participation, we will be tracking how many times members have had their pictures hung at the Centre. Generally, pictures will be accepted in the order submitted; however, from time-to-time we will choose pictures from members who have not yet had a picture displayed over those who have had several pictures hung. Also, if the particular mix of pictures in the order submitted, leans too heavily in one direction (for example, pets), we may choose other submitted pictures for variety. All submitted pictures will remain in the Queue until displayed. We will update KSCCC members on the need for pictures at the regular monthly meeting, as necessary, and will email you to let you know when your picture will be displayed.
Submission Process and Requirements
Due to framing and matting limitations, all pictures should be cropped to an 8×10 aspect ratio (portrait or landscape) and be printed at 8”x10” (portrait or landscape). The visible part of the picture will be about 7.6”x9.6”.
The pictures should be printed with a glossy finish, as opposed to a matt finish. To submit your picture, we ask that you first submit your picture through the regular monthly meeting process for viewing and reviewing pictures as explained here. If necessary you can use the “General” category. Please note in the body of your email, that you are submitting the picture for display in the Seniors’ Centre. Anytime after the review, you can have your picture printed and drop it off in an envelope, at the front desk at the Seniors’ Centre. The envelope should be addressed as follows:
From:
Your Name
Date:
The date you drop the picture off
To:
KSC Camera Club
Attention:
Jan & Bruce Turner
When the pictures come down
When pictures come down, we will place them in a binder which will be available at camera club meetings and other events for viewing. If any members want their pictures back they can simply retrieve them from the binder.
If you have any questions or comments, please send them to contact@ksccc.ca attention Jan & Bruce Turner or talk to Jan or Bruce at the next meeting. We’re looking forward to your participation, and the Seniors’ Centre is excited to see your new work.
The speaker at our November meeting will be local photographer RicharD Murphy. He says his presentation will explore:
who I am, what I’ve done, what I do, and why I do it
Having lived in Kanata since his early childhood, RicharD first began in photography while attending the Earl of March S.S. where he was encouraged by his very patient art teachers. To further his photographic education, RicharD moved to London, Ontario and studied at Fanshawe College where he specialized in large-format, commercial product photography.
RicharD has worked in Ottawa’s photographic industry for over twenty-five years in such areas as custom darkroom printing, artwork reproduction, corporate portraiture, commercial magazine photography, and technical imaging for national heritage organizations such as Library and Archives Canada and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
A technical photographer by day, and a fine art photographer by night, RicharD takes equal pleasure photographing computer network equipment as he does the undersides of mushrooms.
To see examples of RicharD’s work, check out his website.
When the KSCCC meets in person, we invite members to show images that they would like to have reviewed. While the Kanata Seniors’ Centre was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved to an online meeting format. This was not really conducive to submitting work for review by other club members.
In an attempt to provide members with a forum to post images for review we set up a Facebook page and invited members to post images for comment and review. This was not particularly successful and very few people used the page for that purpose.
The KSCCC Executive discussed the value of having a Facebook page and, as a result of these discussions, it was determined that the site would be shut down immediately.
Lorraine Fernando will give a presentation on Painting with Light – Bending Pixels on Friday, October 14, 2022.
Lorraine has been photographing for about ten years, and has spent some time trying to find her photographic voice – what interests her, and what types of images she likes to create.
At the Seniors Centre open house held on September 7, Marianne Wilkinson approached the club for help:
I’m in the process of completing a book about Kanata. Its title is “The Kanata Concept” and the subheading is “how the community created an award-winning city”. I’m presently looking for photos or maps that will illustrate parts of the book, particularly ones showing the community in its early years, historic sites/buildings that still exist, and some of the terrain.
If any member of the camera club has photos that would be suitable I’d like to see them and if they are used give credit to the photographer. If others are willing to take some now of sites that I’d provide I’d do the same, giving credit in the book.
